Daily Journal Entry:
This morning we were up early at 6:45 AM, as we had quite a bit to do. We had a quick breakfast, broke camp and then headed off at 9:20 AM to Volubilis (as we had used up too much battery power, however, we had to push start the truck). We got to Volubilis at around noon.
We had about one and three-quarter hours to view the ruins. The first hour or so was with a guide. As Lars was doing his usual photo stuff, we got quite behind, so we were not able to hear the full commentary. The ruins date from the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD, and they were one of the Roman Empire's most remote outposts after the area was annexed in about 40 AD.
The ruins were quite nice, with the most impressive parts being the mosaics, the Triumphal Arch, the House of Columns and the Basilica. Most of the mosaics have been left in situ.
After a quick lunch off the truck outside the ruins, we headed off for Fes. We got to Fes that evening at 4:45 PM and we stay at Camping International. That evening we take it easy in the campsite. |
